There is no such thing as a healthy tan. Research has shown that there are correlations between sun tanning and skin cancer. The Ultraviolet component of the sun is divided into three. These are UVA, UVB and UVC. The UVB is responsible for darkening the human skin and the formation of skin cancer. However, there are safety measures that one should put in place before getting a tan.
When the human skin is exposed to the sun, it produces melanin. This is a pigment responsible for darken of the skin. This pigment is produced excessively when the ultraviolet rays of the sun get in contact with the skin.
There are artificial means of causing the production of a tan in the presence of ultraviolet light. These include the use of tanning beds and sun lamps. Though these artificial means are successful, the natural methods are healthier.
Before setting off to get a tan, it is in one's best interest to understand the intricacies in it. Different skins react to the sun in diverse manners. This implies that the level of protection that will be offered to individuals vary.
Prior to getting a sun tan, one is to get him/herself clean. All traces of makeup and perfume should be washed away from the body. This will help to reduce the negative effect of the ultraviolet rays of the sun on the skin.
One is not to go tanning in the sun between the hours of twelve and three in the afternoon. At this period, the sun is at its peak. Apply a sun screen with a low sun protection formula on your skin. Ensure that this lotion/cream/oil touches all areas of the skin.
It is crucial that one understands his/her type of skin before going for a tan. The effect of the sun on skin types vary. There are skin types that will never sun tan irrespective of hours a person spends under the sun.
The duration a person is to stay under the sun also depends on the skin type. Some skins are prone to sunburns easily than others. When a skin sunburns, it is an indication of damage in the DNA of the skin. Many cases of skin cancer have been traced to sunburns.
It is also necessary that one does not sun-tan on a daily basis. There should be at least a day between the days a person sun-tans. Ensure that you are sun tanning and not sun burning.
